Appledore book festival
“A terrific festival!” Michael Morpurgo children’s author and former Children’s Laureate The Appledore Book Festival is a registered charity founded by author Nick Arnold in 2006 with the aim of spreading a love of reading and learning in North Devon. More ambitiously it has sought to regenerate the community by encouraging visitors to this beautiful part of England. In 2009 these dreams came true.

“We have had three very rewarding and enriching experiences “ South Molton Community School librarian.
A book festival is more than just a gathering of authors and audiences to talk about books – it’s a place where a community celebrates its culture and its heritage and in doing so gains a new sense of self-worth. The way that Appledore brings it about makes it just a little bit special. It’s a combination of a beautiful and historic location and a genuinely friendly downto- earth community feel that makes each and everyone feel like an honoured guest.
The festival got off to a flying start as former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo addressed a sell-out audience in a brilliant talk that won tears and laughter and tears of laughter.
Amongst the many “big names” of the festival there were superb speeches by Martin Bell, Benedict Allen and Chris Mullin whilst bestselling author Kate Furnivall won the hearts of new fans in Appledore by donating her festival fee to the Appledore lifeboat who saved the lives of herself and her son some years before. Also in 2009 Ade Orchard donated his fee and book sales proceeds to two charities – Combat Stress (the Ex-Services Mental Welfare Society) and the Royal Navy Historic Flight.
